Catholic History – Lisbon to Rome

This comprehensive tour covers all of the most important pilgrim routes and locations, including Fatima, Santiago de Compostela, Madrid, Lourdes, Turin, Venice, Assisi and Rome. Finish the tour with three nights in Rome, including visits to the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, and Trevi Fountain, as well as a Papal audience when available.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive Lisbon airport. En route to Fatima, view the “Miracle of the Bleeding Host”

Arrive at Lisbon airport and meet your Destinations representative, who will stay with you throughout the tour. En route to Fatima, stop at Santarem to view the “Miracle of the Bleeding Host.” Dinner and overnight in Fatima

Day 2 – Tour the holy places at the Shrine of Fatima

Fatima is where the Blessed Mother appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. Tour the holy places at the Shrine of Fatima, including the Basilica, the tombs of the children, The Chapel of the Apparitions, and the Miraculous Fountain. See Valinhos, where Our Lady appeared to the children. Visit the Fatima church and Aljustrel, the hamlet where the children were raised. Overnight in Fatima

Day 3 – The Carmelite Monastery at Coimbra, Born Jesus, the Holy Mountain of Samiero

After Mass, head for Braga and stop at the Carmelite Monastery at Coimbra. Continue to Braga for a visit to Bom Jesus and the “Holy Mountain of Samiero.” Dinner and overnight in Braga

Day 4 – Santiago de Compostela, the Cathedral of St. James, and a tour of the basilica

Leave for Santiago de Compostela, one of the most famous shrines in Christendom. Tradition holds that the Apostle James was cast ashore here, that he preached for seven years and was responsible for the conversion of Spain before returning to the Holy Land. Celebrate Mass at the Cathedral of St James and take a tour of the basilica. Dinner and overnight in Santiago

Day 5 – After breakfast, travel to Leon

Dinner and overnight in the Leon area

Day 6 – Panoramic tour of Madrid landmarks, including the Royal Palace

Drive to Madrid and enjoy a panoramic tour of famous landmarks, including the Royal Palace. Overnight in Madrid

Day 7 – Explore Zaragoza

Leave for Zaragoza and an afternoon visit to this thriving city. Dinner and overnight in Zaragoza

Day 8 – Drive to Lourdes and take a brief tour of the city

Dinner and overnight in Lourdes

Day 9 – Shrine of Lourdes, Bolly Mill, Cachot, the parish church

Following Mass, visit the Shrine of Lourdes and take a walking tour. Visit Boly Mill, where St. Bernadette was born; the Cachot, a former jail and her home during the apparitions; and the parish church. The afternoon is free – explore the legendary baths of the miraculous Lourdes spring, or climb the mountain of the Stations of the Cross. Dinner and overnight in Lourdes

Day 10 – Visit the walled city Cathedrale de St-Nazaire

Drive to Carcassonne and visit the fantastic walled city Cathedrale de St-Nazaire, with its beautiful stained glass and ancient organ (the oldest in France). Dinner and overnight in the Carcassonne area

Day 11 – Drive the coastal route to Nice

Dinner and overnight in Nice

Day 12 – A full day in Nice

Enjoy a full day of leisure in the charming port city of Nice. Overnight in Nice

Day 13 – Visit the Holy Shroud of Turin

Drive to Turin and visit to the “Holy Shroud of Turin.” Dinner and overnight in Turin

Day 14 – En route to Venice, visit Padua and the basilica of St. Anthony

Leave for Venice; en route stop at Padua and the basilica of St Anthony, with bronzes by Donatello.
Dinner and overnight in Venice

Day 15 – Walking tour of Venice, including St. Mark’s Cathedral and the Bridge of Sighs

Enjoy a walking tour of Venice with a visit to St Mark’s Cathedral, the Doge’s Palace, and The Bridge of Sighs. Overnight in Venice

Day 16 – Walking tour of Assisi, including the Basilicas of St. Francis and St. Clare

Leave for Assisi and take a walking tour of the city; see the Basilicas of St Francis and St Clare, San Damiano and Santa Maria Degli Angeli. Dinner and overnight in Assisi

Day 17 – En route to Rome, visit Siena and Tivoli

Drive to Rome by way of Siena and the beautiful town of Tivoli. Dinner and overnight in Rome

Day 18 – Tour the Coliseum, Roman Forum, Piazza Veneaia, Trevi Fountain

Tour the Coliseum and the Roman Forum, Piazza Venezia, Piazza Barberini and the famed Triton, Via Veneto and Aurelian walls, Trevi Fountain and San Angelo. Dinner and overnight in Rome

Day 19 – Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, & Catacombs; possible Papal audience

The day includes a Papal audience followed by a visit to the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. In the afternoon, visit the catacombs. Farewell dinner at a restaurant Overnight in Rome

Day 20 – En route to home, visit the airport
